What's Growing at Skyline Farm

In recent years, the relationship between farmer and chef has become increasingly important. Cooks and diners have greater interest in where their food is coming from. Here at Meriwether's, we have spent the last year and a half shortening the distance between field and table by operating out own 5 acre vegetable farm at the apex of Skyline Boulevard, right here in Portland. We have just completed our first full harvest, and with great results. Farm-fresh tomatoes, eggplants, peppers, herbs, greens and a number of other vegetables are used throughout our menu. With fall upon us, we are harvesting some wonderful produce and are looking forward to the winter crop.

Variety naming in vegetables is fascinating. The name can reflect a traditional region, style of vegetable, shape or color. Occasionally there is a good story or joke behind the name, and often times the name means little and is interchangeable with others. Whatever the variety name, the ground, the climate, the grower and the cook will ultimately determine the flavor in the end. So read and enjoy the names, but judge by the taste.
